Job-seekers ("chomeurs") should register at their local ANPE (Agence Nationale Pour l'Emploi) for unemployment benefits and help with their search.

Low-income individuals or families may be interested to know of the RMI (revenu minimum d'insertion). This is a monthly income from the state designed to help them to survive the day-to-day struggle while finding a way to re-enter the working world. Mothers who do not want to return to work while they raise their young children may still qualify. To apply for the RMI, ask your "mairie" for a form (this is also often combined with a request for the CMU - see the Medical System page). You will need to provide a declaration of your income for the year preceeding your "demande". You must be over 25 OR have children to qualify. For more information, contact an "assistant(e) social(e)" - the "mairie" will give you a number to call. The RMI has a number of side benefits, including many free professional training opportunities and reduced entrance to most parks, museums and other leisure sites.
